WATER AND WOMEN

The passion of Mudula Water!

Mudula Water strives to break the cycle of poverty by empowering women through the development of clean water schemes in areas of extreme need.

When the burden of water collection and water borne illness is lifted, girls can remain in school and women can invest more time on family life, agriculture and owning small businesses.

With this triad- accessible, potable water, education of girls, and women's investments- whole communities will be transformed.

While clean water development is at its core, Mudula Water is also involved in other interventions such as education and literacy, maternal and child health, and economic initiatives.

All projects emphasize the empowerment of women. Investing in girls and women in poor communities- known as the "Girl Effect"- is a proven strategy for fighting extreme poverty.

History:

Mudula Water was founded in 2011 with the goal of bringing clean water to over 10,000 people in Mudula, Ethiopia. In many poor regions around the world, including Mudula, the burden of water collection is "women's work".

Women and girls spend hours daily fetching dirty water which keeps them from doing farm work, household chores, running small business and going to school. By bringing clean water directly to communities through wells, gravity flow systems and other methods keeps people healthy, allows girls to go to school and frees up time for women to spend on family and employment.

What a way to support a woman!

Mudula Water is addressing root causes of extreme poverty- lack of clean water, illiteracy, few health resources and little access to capital- in the context of gender inequality.

In just 12 months, Mudula Water met its fundraising goal of $150,000!

The construction of the gravity flow water system is well on its way and should completed by the end of 2013. Mudula Water is now working to collect funds for a community library project as well as scholarships for four women to attend midwifery school.
