Specific Projects

Koshinda Water Project - FUNDED!!

Mudula Water's first project is a gravity flow water system that will serve over 10,000 people. Potable water from a natural spring located at a higher elevation will be delivered to communities in lower elevations through 10 miles of hand-laid underground pipeline. There will be a total of 8 public water taps in Mudula town and 3 surrounding villages. The final water scheme will be community-owned and operated. Other components of the project include health and sanitation education, construction of pit latrines, and building cattle troughs. All of the funding has been secured and construction will be completed by 2013.

Degale Library and Community Center

In the center of the market square in Mudula, Ethiopia stands a majestic 500 year old fig tree, affectionately called Degale by the local people. The tree has been a source of wisdom, community gathering, and spiritual guidance for generations, with local decisions and negotiations almost always made under this tree. Mudula Water is collaborating with Ethiopia Reads/Tesfa and the local community to create the Degale Library, a community center and public library, named in honor of the wisdom of the old fig tree.

The Degale Library will be an L- shaped four-room structure with a spacious library, computer lab, classroom and office with storage space. Each one of these rooms will open onto an inviting central courtyard with amble outdoor seating. Public toilets will be available within the compound and access to clean water will be located at an adjacent site. This will be the first public library in a region of over 100,000 people.

Adult Literacy

"Literacy Leads to Healthy Communities"

Family health literacy is the tact of incorporating basic health education into adult literacy curricula. This horizontal integration fosters a strong and direct link between literacy and health, and has shown to have very positive results in an array of contexts; particularly in areas in which literacy rates, public health knowledge and advocacy are very low. We plan to work in concert with local health providers in preparing and maintaining bi-monthly presentation schedule. We will work on basic literacy and numeracy relevant to the needs of the community. Health topics within the literacy program will include maternal and child health, sexual and reproductive health, and environment and community health.

Mudula Midwives - PENDING PROJECT!

In rural Ethiopia, only 3% of childbirths are attended by skilled professional and there are no trained midwives in Mudula or its surrounding villages. Mudula Water will identify women from Mudula/Tembaro district to be scholarship recipients to attend Hamlin College of Midwives.

Hamlin College of Midwives, located just outside if Addis Ababa, is affiliated with the well-known Hamlin Fistula Hospital. The midwifery program provides 4 years of rigorous training in labor and delivery, prenatal and antenatal care, HIV/AIDs, community health, information technology and management skills. All graduates are committed to serving their communities for a minimum of five years.

Self Help Groups - FUNDED!!

Designed to empower impoverished women, the Self-Help Groups target participants who are marginalized in society. In addition to financial training, the Self-Help Group participants receive training about support and empowerment. They learn to share their struggles and begin to identify with other group members. They learn to operate their own savings and loan program, so they decide how money is invested. A close-knit support system is built to help with family issues, to be a safe place during times of crisis and to provide a sense of community and belonging.
